From BRITAIN about SOUTH AFRICA

“In African culture (nDebele), it can be considered impolite or disrespectful to say “No” to your elders or superiors. Therefore, I knew always to be careful how I phrased questions to my employees in South Africa, as sometimes they would answer, “Yes” to be respectful, even if the correct answer was “No”. In South Africa this has sometimes led to (white) employers thinking that their (black) employees are lying or have not understood the question – when in fact, the employee wishes only not to offend their boss!”
